[BAREUM CNB Publisher Alex Kim] -

[BAREUM CNB Publisher Alex Kim] - From reading linked to social sciences to a recognition improvement campaign, expanding learning -
Cheonan City High School of Buddhist Studies (Principal Jang Ho-jung) invited author Ko Byeong-soo, author of "The World of Medicine Met at the Cinema," to operate a social and science curriculum-linked integrated reading program at the Daeom Library on October 22 (Thursday) during the 5th and 6th periods.
This lecture was not merely a one-off artist invitation event, but was prepared as part of a step-by-step integrated reading program that expands the three-month reading and debate activities into a meeting with the artist and subsequently connects to an awareness improvement campaign.
Students explored various aspects of disease and treatment, respect for life, and the relationship between medicine and society through reading and discussion over a 3-month period before the lecture. They spent time organizing their thoughts while understanding disease and medicine through scientific knowledge and examining the social meanings embedded in medical issues.
This meeting with the author provided an opportunity to deepen the content students explored through reading and debate, and to connect the medical knowledge encountered in books to actual medical practice and social issues. In particular, it emphasized the importance of expanding the view of medicine beyond a discipline solely concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases to one that also understands human life and social environments together.
After the lecture, students plan to carry out a campaign to improve perceptions based on what they learned through reading, discussion, and meeting the author. They intend to connect learning to practice by informing others about the problems they investigated and directly producing and delivering messages to foster correct perceptions.
Through this, students experience reading books and understanding knowledge beyond the level of discovering problems, broadening their thoughts through discussion, and sharing their learning with the community.
Lee U-nyun, who planned this program, stated, 'Reading should not end with understanding the content of a book; it should lead to connecting learned knowledge with other subjects and exploring real-world problems.' She added, 'We hope that the learning accumulated through three months of reading, debate, and meetings with authors will lead to changes in students' perceptions and behaviors. I believe that the experience of sharing what students have questioned and explored on their own with the community is the true value of integrated reading.'
Meanwhile, Cheonan Buldang High School continues to operate curriculum-linked integrated reading programs centered on the Daom Library, including author invited lectures and student-led reading activities. In the future, it plans to enhance students' self-directed inquiry capabilities and sense of community through educational activities that connect reading, subject learning, and social practice.
