Tip privacy & verification

Private intake

We process your headline, country, event date, language, account, optional photos and public links for editorial verification. We do not request an ID, exact street address or GPS. An alias and safe reply email are optional and are not published. Submission does not guarantee publication.

Photos and identity

Photos are decoded and re-encoded as review JPEGs under 1 MB. Embedded GPS coordinates, altitude and GPS date, when present, are stored separately in encrypted private records for location verification. Metadata may be wrong or altered and is not proof. They are never added to public photos or automatic reports. New originals, including embedded metadata, are encrypted and transferred to a private newsroom X-drive archive. If the computer or drive is unavailable, encrypted originals wait in private server storage. Public copies are fully mosaicked and reduced in size, with location metadata removed; video sound is removed. Older submissions may have only review copies, not originals. Faces, documents and landmarks can still identify people in a photo. Separate permission is required to publish photos; otherwise they are for private verification only.

Accounts, contacts and photos are encrypted at rest outside public folders and available only to authenticated editors. Transfers use HTTPS. This is not an end-to-end encrypted whistleblowing service. Hosting access logs can contain IP addresses; anonymity cannot be guaranteed.

Evidence before publication

We record original sources, time, location, usage rights, video scenes and timecodes, comparisons against independent reporting, image reuse or manipulation concerns, contradictions and safety risks. Reposts of one source do not count as independent evidence. Automated file checks, visual-similarity hints and webpage retrieval cannot establish truth. Images and videos require editorial review.

Our workflow is intake → translation → evidence review → writing → Sera’s final editorial review → publication. War, violence and retaliation-risk reports require a recorded human safety review. Missing or unresolved contradictory evidence holds publication. Absence from major media does not itself prove or disprove a claim.

What is made public

Raw tips are not automatically published. An approved story identifies publishable evidence and verification limitations while protecting the source. We do not automatically upload private text or images to external search or AI services. Public video and news sites opened by editors have their own privacy policies.

Retention and your choices

Private intake, encrypted originals, review copies, embedded photo location and contact information are retained for at most 180 days from submission, then deleted. Use your private receipt to delete them sooner. Deletion of an offline X-drive copy is applied when it next connects. Published stories, approved photos and public evidence remain part of the newspaper’s archive; contact the newsroom for correction or removal review. A recent recovery copy may temporarily retain prior records; deletion records are reapplied after recovery. Tips are not used for marketing or AI training.
